Arbitration is a method of dispute resolution that is an alternative to litigation, and is sometimes referred to as "private litigation." It is agreed between the parties in disputes arising from domestic and international business relations, sports, labor relations and foreign investments. Sometimes it is also contracted by states to resolve mutual disputes.

On the basis of the arbitration agreement, a body independent of the parties is constituted — the arbitration court, is assigned the task of resolving the dispute in the shortest possible time by applying the law.

The arbitral tribunal is made up of arbitrators chosen for that function by the parties or an institution entrusted by the parties with the organization of the arbitration. They must be completely independent of the parties and impartial in their work and decision-making.

Belgrade Law Conference, in cooperation with the Permanent Arbitration at the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia, organized a panel on arbitration at which eminent experts spoke about arbitration, Ivana Jakovljević, Sekretar Stalne arbitraže pri Privrednoj komori Srbije, dr Jovan Nikčević, arbitar u NKP Law Office i Nina Janković advokat sa uzom specijalnošću u međunarodnoj arbitraži.
